Buyer’s Guide: Choose the Right Tires

One thing keeps you in contact with the ground. Your tires. Each vehicle has best and worst options for stability, fuel economy, aesthetics, and ride comfort. Here is a free tire guide, outlining some of the best tires compared to the different road conditions and automobile types our clients own. Tire Shop Wichita>>

Tire Basics

Michelin for the most part, took us from horse-buggy metal wheels to the robust tires we see on automobiles today. But, this development isn’t as old as you might think. Tire design, R&D, and mass production is only as old as the 1940’s. Toyo Tire Near Me>>

A Typical Radial Tire Consists Of:

Tread

The tread of the tire is the visible portion that makes contact with the road. This material is durable rubber and wire presented in designs that aid the tire in traction & handling. These grooves and valleys (tread) create pathways, places where there is concrete contact and areas where water is channeled.

Do the tread patterns have significance?

Absolutely. These tire engineers are considering the elements, driving patterns, and vehicle/driver dynamics when they are producing these tires. That is why tire shops aim to match you with the best tire for your local weather, elevation, personal driving patterns, and vehicle type. Michilen Tires>>

Shoulder

The shoulder is the portion between the tread and sidewall. This section of the tire becomes increasingly susceptible to damage in underinflated tires. How do you know if this area of the tire is worn? When you see wire & fabric, your tire is damaged and you run the risk of a random blowout.

Sidewall

Steel and various other materials make up this visible portion on the side of a radial tire. This material stabilizes the tires side-to-side motion, and keep the compressed air in-between the tire & rim. It is on the sidewall that you will find listed information such as pressure ratings, size and type.

Bead

The bead is the inner circle of the tire. The small area where the sidewall meets the rim is the bead. New tire beads are incredibly strong and inflexible. This strength prevents air from leaking out and provides tension to remain in contact with the wheel without slippage. What is the bead made of? Steel wire and rigid rubber. The tensile nature of the bead is why tires need to be professionally installed to rims. Buy New Tires>>

How To Read The Tire Sidewall

Each tire has differing letters and numbers. You’ll want a basic understanding of this information in order to replace your vehicle tires properly.

How Can You When You Need to Replace Your Tires?

Visually inspect your tires for wear or damage. When you are inspecting these tires, get on a flat surface and put your parking brake on! Follow these steps to inspect your tires. Front wheels, turn your steering wheel all the way left or right when parked and inspect both sides of the tire. Rear wheels are trickier to inspect. The easiest method is the penny method. Take a penny and place it in the groove with Honest Abe's portrait facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, it is time to replace your tires, especially if winter or rainy seasons are approaching. Stay aware of your vehicle's tire health and you will not be broadsided when your tires are actually ready to be replaced. Cooper Tires>>

How Do I Pick The Right Tire?

The right tire for your vehicle depends on what type of vehicle you are driving and in what seasons you plan on driving in. Listed are our most common tire types for passenger vehicles, light trucks, vans, SUVs, and off-road vehicles. Use this information to discover which type fits your driving needs and your vehicle for the smoothest ride. Shop Tires By Size>>

Tire Types

All tires share basic similarities, but not all tires are created with the same performance in mind. What may be the best option for a commuter car will not be the optimal tire for a light truck or van. Using the right tire type is essential to your safety and fuel economy.

All-Season Tires

All-season tires are a great option for year’ round tires. This class of tires provide a smooth, quiet ride and offer versatile performance in varying weather conditions. Benefit: Long tread life and decent fuel economy. No, they will not handle snow like snow tires; they are built to handle everything well.

All-season tires help the driver get through the various seasons without having to switch out tires to match the differing road conditions. Ideal in Oklahoma, because of our dry, rainy and snowy seasons, where we experience very little icy conditions. Shop Tires By Vehicle>>

Cooper CS5 Toyo Extensa HP

The Extensa HP delivers all-season handling, a comfortable ride, and up to a 45,000-mile warranty all at an unexpected price. Designed with value in mind, this high performance all-season tire offers the quality and styling you expect from Toyo Tires.

Cooper CS5

CS5 Ultra Touring

The CS5 has excellent ability to grip the road in dry & wet conditions. The tread last exceptionally long, due to the cooper design. The tire is quiet for city & neighborhood driving, has a max rating for handling (accelerating breaking, steering, & turning), but of course has very little ability to grip dirt, mud, sand, rock, grave, and other off-road surfaces.

All-Terrain (A/T) Tires & Light Truck Tires

When you think of A/T tires you think of trucks, SUVs and four-wheel-drive vehicles that encounter off-road conditions. Some of the best A/T tires we found are also designed for paved roads, providing good traction in wet and snowy weather and producing lower noise at high speeds than off-road tires do. Shop Tires By Brand>>

Cooper A/T3 Cooper Discoverer AT/3

The Cooper Discoverer A/T3 is one of the best all-terrain tires on the market today, providing the traction your vehicle needs to handle nearly all types of terrain you'll encounter. As an all-terrain tire, it has the right kind of traction to handle dirt and paved roads, construction sites, and wet and snowy road conditions. The tire is rated for mud and snow use, and a limited warranty covers wear on the tread for up to 55,000 miles.

Toyo Open Country A/T II

Open Country A/T II

This versatile all-terrain tire offers excellent traction and tread life along with a blatantly aggressive tread design and quiet ride. The Open Country A/T II is backed by a tread wear warranty of up to 65,000 miles and our No Regrets® 45-day, 500-mile trial offer.

Xtreme sizes feature a deeper tread depth, and a more aggressive tread and shoulder design. See size specifications for a list of sizes, designated by “XT” under Construction. Light-Truck Tires

Mud or Snow Tires

Mud tires are ideal for off-roaders and those who regularly drive on unpaved roads, as they are designed to get the best traction on a variety of different surfaces, such as sand dunes and rocky terrain. These tires use a heavy and blocky tread pattern to bite into ground when you are on loose or wet terrain. Several tire types can double over as snow tires. Snow tires have tread designs that improve your traction on snowy or even icy roads. They have more sipes, thin slits across the tire that allow it to grip the road in wet conditions, and tread cavities that drain and expel water and snow. We looked for tires that are capable of gripping the road and cut into snow and ice to give you better traction than other options. Tire Maintenance Tips>>

Open Country MT Toyo Open Country M/T

The Open Country M/T is legendary for durability, off-road performance, long tread life, and an aggressive tread pattern. It’s designed to help trucks work hard on pavement, then work just as hard when roads are muddy, snowy, and rocky—or when there are no roads at all.

Cooper Discoverer STT

Discoverer STT

The Discoverer STT PRO™ is the most extreme all-season, off-road tire Cooper® offers to date, providing remarkable off-road performance without sacrificing on-road traction.

  • Tread design helps to prevent stone retention
  • Armor Tek3® Construction for added tire durability
  • The shoulder of the tire was designed with soft surface "cleats" and mud "scoops"

Where to Buy Tires

Local Tire Shop – Hercules Tire & Auto Repair

In Tulsa & Broken Arrow it feels like there are options on every corner when it comes to tire, Lube, and auto repair, so sifting through the noise is the key. The major tire manufacturers, such as Michelin, Goodyear, Toyo and Cooper, sell tires to resellers who in turn offer them to the public across the nation. Since Hercules Tire & Auto Repair once solely wholesaled Hercules tires in Oklahoma & Kansas, we have had a unique opportunity to create lasting relationships with all the tire wholesalers. Out of that, we are able to sell just about any tire size, type, and specialty in this region. With our five stores, it is even more likely we have it in stock. But we can get it usually same day or within a few days. Find A Tire Shop Near Me>>

Hercules Tire Sales Approach

Our tire sales team take an educational approach when they explain the work your car needs. Generally, a salesperson who takes the time to talk to you and Hercules Tire & Auto Repair Tire Brands answer your questions clearly, will give you multiple options and explain the pros and cons of each approach. When it comes to tires, you generally have multiple options, so watch out for salespeople who try to convince you to buy one particular set of tires without explaining why. Our ultimate goal is to give our clients the best product/service at the best price.

It is our job to ask you if we can change your oil, replace your brakes, check your alignment and so on, but it is not our job or our right to scare you into those services.

If our technician sees a problem with your vehicle, such as low oil, we will ask for your permission before performing the service. Never be afraid to ask to see the issue on your vehicle for yourself, before making a decision. Local Tires Sales>>

Four Tires Verses Two Tires

Four new tires is best, but you can get away with two. Four tires will prevent unnecessary wear and tear on your vehicle, but two good tires on your car, in many cases, can help eliminate that additional wear. However, if only replacing two, it would need to be fronts or backs, but not a combination. Never replace one front tire and one back tire, as this leads to alignment issues, which can lead to your tires wearing down prematurely, making your vehicle more difficult to handle.

You Must Replace Four Tires With Four-Wheel-Drive & All-Wheel-Drive Vehicles

For a four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicle, you need to replace all four tires at a time. Otherwise, you put unnecessary strain on the central differential, which is the gear train that allows your outer tire to rotate faster than the inner tire while turning, resulting in bigger issues. The same thing goes with snow & mud tires.

Included Services

At Hercules, we pride ourselves on the “total price,” pricing strategy. Pay attention when getting a quote from multiple tire shops and verify they are quoting you on the same products & services. Some tire shops will state a service is included, and then try to hide the charge on your bill. Best Tire Shop in the Tulsa Metro>>
