3,000 to 5,000 Mile Oil Change Still A Good Idea?

posted on

Oil Change

Remember you can consult your owner’s manual to understand your oil change intervals. But also don’t forget, your vehicle’s manufacturers warranties are also out of alignment with their recommendations. Because of this difference in warrantability and true performance, we continue to recommend an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles as added insurance on your investment. Oil & Lube Shop Wichita>>

Oil Improvements

It is true, oil has improved massively, and you can confidently push your oil changes out a few thousand more miles than in the past. So If you want to be on the high end of the spectrum for an oil change, it isn’t necessarily a death sentence for your vehicle. However, if you drive on dirt roads, in harsh conditions, and pull more weight than a typical driver, and drive more than 13,000 miles a year, you are a prime candidate for an oil change and checkup more frequently than the “best case scenario” car driver.

Several vehicle models allow for oil changes as far out as 10,000 miles, but once again remember, their warranties won’t necessarily match this increased confidence in their engines & parts. If these cars can be maintenance less frequently, wouldn’t the warranty reflect the improved quality in these parts? They don’t. That is why we recommend you stay far ahead of the manufacturers recommendations concerning preventative maintenance. We do not want you to have to buy a new one of their cars a few years earlier. Always consult the owner's manual or maintenance schedule to see how often to change the oil in your vehicle and what type of oil it uses. Many vehicles are changing the oil types they use and new oil types are being produced such as 0W16!

Severe Driving Conditions

Although manufactures don’t necessarily define several driving conditions, it is clear that frequent trailer towing, extensive stop-go driving or idling in traffic, driving in extreme heat or cold, or frequent short-distance driving are all conditions that can be defined as severe. But where is the line? This is why if you are driving in a city, you likely are a candidate to have your oil changed and vehicle maintenance far before the recommended schedule.

Owner’s Manual Recommended Oil Change Intervals

Nervous about going 10,000 miles without preventative maintenance? Consider getting an oil change when you have your tires rotated, which is every six months. Assuming your vehicle make model has major support behind increasing the inverted and you are not driving in any conditions that might be defined as severe. If you take the approach of waiting longer intervals to change your oil, which we do not necessarily recommend, then check the oil level at least once a month to make sure your vehicle is maintaining the proper amount. Another reason you should stick with the safety net interval of 3,000 to 5,000 mile oil changes.

If your hope is to be more environmentally conscious, your driving patterns permit it, and your vehicle manual states you can change the oil much less frequently than 3,000 miles, then it is safe to say that you can move your oil change up to the 5,000 mark. Always consult a professional.
