Experiencing A Radiator or Cooling-System Problem?

posted on

Coolant

Three signs are undeniable that you are having a radiator issue:

1.      Steam is pouring from under your hood

2.      A temperature warning light is glowing bright red on your dashboard

3.      The needle in the temperature gauge is showing High

Overheating is a serious mechanical problem. Best practice is to turn off the engine in these situations, do not continue driving. Driving with an overheated engine can warp cylinder heads and damage internal engine parts such as valves, camshafts and pistons.

Fill the radiator Reservoir

Once the engine has cooled, check to see if it needs fluids. Remember the best mix is a 50-50 antifreeze-water mix. Although this is an easy fix, it may not be the issue behind the overheating. At this point, it is best to consult a professional.

Reasons an engine will overheat:

  • Low coolant level
  • Leaks
  • Coolant has lost its corrosion-inhibiting properties
  • The thermostat may be stuck in the closed position or clogged
  • The engine-cooling fan has stopped working
  • The radiator's cooling fins are clogged
  • The radiator cap has gone bad
  • The head gasket is leaking coolant.
  • The water pump is broken
  • The belt is not working or has lost the power required to pump the coolant
  • Exceeding the vehicle's cooling capacity.

Check Coolant Level

Checking the level on the side of your car’s overflow tank on a regular basis. If it is low, top it off. Often, this is an indication of a small leak. We recommend you have your coolant tested and the entire system inspected by a mechanic every couple of years
